Mount Zion Evangelical Women (ELW)
The MOUNT ZION EVANGELICAL WOMEN (ELW) are a part of the BC Synodical and National ELW.
Our ELW is very active at Mount Zion and are involved in many areas of the church and community life. Our mission is as a Christ-centered community of women who are committed to nurturing our faith and spiritual strength to enable us to be people of God in mission.
Activities:
- We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 1 pm (except July and August) for our meetings. These meetings are held at member’s homes and include first a bible study followed by a short business meeting and then light refreshments. We use the bible study series from our national ELW Esprit magazine.
- Quilt making and Canadian Lutheran World Relief kits/projects – A group of women meet Thursday morning from January to May at 9 to 12 in the church basement to assemble adult and children’s quilts, plus a variety of other kits to be sent overseas to refugee camps in May. These kits include supplies donated by members of the church and other interested people. In 2009, we sent 100 quilts, 77 baby quilts, 60 school kits, 50 baby layettes, 25 bandages, and 56 baby caps overseas.
- We organize a variety of social events for the congregation throughout the year. For 2010 these will include:
· May 1st – Mother and Daughter Pot Luck Dinner at 6 p.m.
· May 30th – Everybody’s Birthday Party (each month is represented by a decorated table for attendees)
· June 20th – Father’s Day BBQ after church
· November 6th – Fall Tea and Sale at 2 – 4 p.m. Activities include refreshments, baking including Norwegian lefse), White Elephant sale, crafts, Fair Trade coffee and Four Corners Goods from India and South America
· November 28th – Advent Pot Luck Dinner at 6 p.m. to begin the Advent season
4. We fund raise for charities throughout the year. At most of these events a free-will
offering is collected for designated charities. The fall tea and bake sale is our major
fund-raising activity and we also cater at church funerals.
5. Homeless Project – This fall and winter we have been collecting socks, shoes,
sweaters, jackets, and gloves at church to donate to the NW Food bank.
6. World Day of Prayer- March 5th, 2010 – we participate with other New Westminster
Churches (Catholic, United, Baptist, Anglican and Presbyterian) for a combined service at the host church.
