The MOUNT ZION EVANGELICAL WOMEN

The MOUNT ZION EVANGELICAL WOMEN (ELW) are a part of the Synodical and National ELW. To find out more about the ELW organization check out www.elw.ca

ELW MISSION: as a Christ-centred community of women we are committed to nurturing our faith and spiritual strength to enable us to be people of God in mission.

ACTIVITIES:

1.      Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month. We also include a Bible study, taken from the ELW  “Esprit” magazine, at these meetings.

Meeting dates for the remainder of 2007 are May 8, June 12, September 11, October 9, November 13 and December 11.

2.      Quilt-Making and layette assembly begins mid-January Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and goes until the middle of May. Women of the church and community meet Thursday mornings to make quilts and baby layettes. Approximately 100 quilts and 25 layettes are sent to the Lutheran World Federation annually for developing countries.

1.      The first Friday in March we celebrate The World Day of Prayer written by the Women’s Inter-Church Council in Canada. It is an ecumenical gathering for men and women to worship and pray for peace and injustices in our world. We work together with Saint Mary’s Anglican, Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church and Knox Presbyterian women to conduct this event.

2.      We organize several Social events for the congregation.  Planned for 2007 are the following: Everybody’s Birthday Party, February 18; Mother and Daughter Banquet, May 12; Fall Tea and Bake Sale, November 3; Advent Dinner, December 23. Call 604-521-0120 for further information.

1.      We fund-raise for charities through out the year. At most of the events a free-will offering is collected for designated charities. The ‘Fall Tea and Bake Sale’ in November is our major fund-raising activity. In December after the bills are paid, left over money is divided up and given to local and ELCIC endorsed charities.

2.      The Biennial Convention of the BC Synod ELW will be held May 25-27th, 2007 at the University of Victoria. The theme of the convention is ‘Reflecting Christ’. Guest speakers are Ruth Vince, Executive Director, ELW, inc. and Pastor Brian Heinrich, Pastor of Lutheran Urban Mission Society.

For further information on any of the ELW activities call Mount Zion Lutheran Church at 604-521-0120.
